Q. What is CVR?
A.It is a New once a month vaginal contraceptive ring which has a good cycle control. This consists of a flexible, soft, transparent, ring (54 mm in diameter and 4 mm thickness) which can easily be inserted by the woman herself into the vagina. After 3 weeks of use the woman removes the ring, there is a ring-free week during which a withdrawal bleeding normally occurs.
Q. What is the advantage of CVR?
A. It gives freedom from taking tablets daily and it is less prone to failure. Unlike tablets this device does not affect your liver and is totally side effects free as compared to pills. The excellent cycle control with NuvaRing is most probably due to the constant hormone levels provided by Combined Contraceptive Vaginal Ring rather than the daily fluctuation that occurs with daily oral pills intake. The incidence of irregular bleeding with CVR is very low.
Q. What are disadvantages of CVR?
A. Some patients might get increased vaginal discharge and vaginal discomfort (foreign body sensation)
Q. How is it used?
A. First ring to be inserted by Gynaecologist, after that patient can be taught to do it herself.
