Hysteroscopy is done for DUB, polyps, fibroids or uterine septum

 

Q. What is HYSTEROSCOPY?

A. It s a minor procedure, that uses high resolution telescope to look inside the uterus (womb), under high magnification. Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure to view the cavity of the uterus.  This is accomplished by using a fiber-optic camera passed through the cervix.  Various types of hysteroscopies are Diagnostic and operative. Diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to view the cavity and assist in diagnosing a problem.  It is useful in the evaluation of abnormal pre- and post-menopausal bleeding in conjunction with a D&C, examining a uterine mass, diagnosing a uterine malformation, and in an infertility evaluation.  Operative hysteroscopy is when a problem is addressed such as removing a polyp or fibroid, treatment of abnormal bleeding with endometrial ablation, tubal ligation, correcting anatomical malformations or removing intrauterine scar tissue.

 

Q. When should I get the HYSTEROSCOPY done?

A. If you having irregular bleeding,inter-menstrual bleeding, repeated abortions, infertility, missed or displaced Cu-T, Ashermann's syndrome, tuberculosis of the Uterus (Womb).

 

Q. Does it require admission?

A. Yes, it is a day care procedure and admission is required for 4 to 6 hours.

 

Q. If it painful?

A. No. 

 

Q. Does it require anaesthesia?

A. Yes, short anaesthesia.

 

Q. What does HYSTEROSCOPY DETECT?

A. It detects increased thickening of the uterine wall that can be pre-cancerous lesions of uterus (Hyperplasia of endometrium), displaced Cu-T, septum of uterus, polyp, fibroid of uterus, some times lost fetal parts left in cases of incomplete abortion, causes of infertility, cannulation of the tubes in cases of infertility.

 

Q. What if HYSTEROSCOPY detects some abnormality ?

A. Biopsy can be taken from the suspicious area / lesion, polyp or fibroid can be removed, septum can be cut, displaced Cu-T can be removed.

 

Q. Is any follow-up required if HYSTEROSCOPY is abnormal?

A. Yes, according to the condition detected, followup hystereoscopy should be done ( as advised by Gynaecologist).
