  • Cervical cancer vaccine is a like other vaccines that we give to a new born child, but it is given to any female aged 9 years to 45 years.
  • It is best given as early as possible, to be more effective.
  • Approved by FDA, Drug controller General of India, WHO, it is also approved in US, Europe, Canada and Australia.
  • It contains virus like particles made by recombinant technology (no live virus).
  • Like other vaccines fewer side-effects are seen like fever, pain, swelling, itching at injection site.
  • Cervical Cancer is cancer of mouth of uterus caused by HPV (human papilloma virus) infection.
  • It causes changes in cells in mouth of uterus that progress to cancer later on (20 years. 
  • 75 % of this HPV infection resolves spontaneously, less than 1% progress to cancer.
  • Associated co factors being sex at early age, multiple sex partners, too many abortions, too many children, sexually transmitted diseases, immunosupression.
  • There are two types of vaccines available type 1 (effective against HPV 16 & 18), and type II (effective against HPV 6, 11, 16 & 18).
  • Cervical cancer is ranked most frequent cancer in India, second most common cancer world wide.
  • Indian population above 15 years is 400 million women who are at risk of cervical cancer.
  • New cases every year 1.5 lacs females.
  • Death in a year due to cervical cancer is 74,000 females.
  • So, it is advisable to take vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.

Q. I am already in physical relations should I take the vaccine?

A. Yes, but it is better effective if taken before exposure to sex. It gives 70% protection after exposure to sex.

 

Q. Can this vaccine be taken during pregnancy?

A. No, it should be avoided during pregnancy, but can be given during lactation.

 

Q. Do I need to PAP smears even after taking vaccine?

A. Yes, as it gives 70% protection.

 

Q. What time of cycle should it be given?

A. Any day of cycle it can be given, there are no relationship with the cycles or periods.

 

Q. Can this vaccine be given to my partner also?

A. Yes, but not still approved in India. First country who approved vaccination in males is Australia.

 

Q. Are there some major side effect? 

A. No, it is safe, but there can be mild pain or swelling at the site of the injection in some patients which lasts for 2 to 3 days.

 

Q. How many doses of the vaccine are to be given?

A. Three doses within six months are to be given for the vaccine to be effective.
