PLANNING FOR PREGNANCY (Preconception Health Check)

Pre-conception healthcare focus is on the issues that you can do before and between pregnancies to increase the chances of having healthy baby. For the some women getting their body ready for pregnancy takes few months and for others may be longer, for example if 100 (hundred) patients want to conceive then 30 will conceive in a month, 75 in a six months and ninety in a year, remaining 10 to 20 patients will take longer than a year. So, pregnancy is due to god grace and one should not panic if all other things are normal. During preparations for pregnancies certain issues to be discussed as medical issues, life styles issues, weight issues, family and mental issues.

Medical Issues -Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, underlying chronic diseases, thyroid disease, cardiac problems, sexually transmitted diseases should be under control.

Weight gain - weight should be reduced before planning for the pregnancy if the BMI is more than 30, and ideal weight should be achieved according to the height of the lady.

Life style issues - Avoid smoking, alcohol, street drugs, toxic substances, herbal drugs, oral contraceptive etc. has to be avoided. Healthy life styles with healthy diet and regular physical exercise should be followed.

Vaccination - Rubella and Hepatitis - B should be taken at least 3 months before planning for pregnancy, as Rubella can cause severe malformation in babies.

These issues should be discussed by the lady with her doctor and nothing should be concealed or hidden from your doctor about your medical and health condition.
